We invite applications for a number of postdoctoral and PhD student positions in star formation using machine learning techniques. The successful candidates will work with members of the recently established project NEMESIS, and in particular with Odysseas Dionatos (U. Vienna),  Marc Audard (U. Geneva) and Gabor Marton (Konkoly Obs.), however, candidates will have the opportunity to spend extended working visits at the other participating institutes.

The successful candidates should have a solid background (experience) in at least one of the following topics: star formation, classification of young stellar objects, application of machine learning techniques in large  datasets. Candidates for the postdoc positions must hold PhD in astrophysics or in a closely related discipline, or have completed their MSc studies (or equivalent) for the PhD positions. Good English communication skills and a strong sense of team spirit, as well as willingness to work in an international research environment are essential.

Available positions:

  • PhD position at the University of Vienna. In Vienna, the successful PhD candidate will  work reduction and compilation of photometric and spectroscopic data with focus mainly between the infrared and millimeter bands. Candidates should have a working background in batch data processing from infrared space missions and/or ground based single dish and interferometric facilities. Background in statistical techniques, machine learning as well as source classification is a plus. The appointment is for the nominal, 3-year duration for PhD studies in Austria with a starting date in autumn 2021.
  • PhD/Postdoc position at the University of Geneva. The successful candidate for the position in Geneva will work on the compilation of multi-wavelength data and the classification of young stellar objects. Applicants for either a PhD or a postdoc position are welcome to apply. Expertise in data compilation, in particular for large datasets, and classification is welcome. The initial appointment will be for one year, renewable annually, contingent upon satisfactory performance, mutual agreement, and availability of funds.
  • Postdoc at the Konkoly Observatory. In Budapest, the successful postdoc candidate will prepare and evaluate training sets for the supervised machine learning tasks at Konkoly Observatory (the Astronomical Institute of the Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences, which belongs to the Eötvös Loránd Research Network). He/she will develop algorithms and environments to test different ML methods to classify young stellar objects and to identify so far undiscovered patterns in the dataset with unsupervised techniques. Background in database building and usage (ADQL, SQL, PSQL), python or R programming, statistics and ML techniques is essential. Background in star formation studies, knowledge of infrared data and signal processing is a plus. The appointment is for 2 years with a possible extension for additional 2 years upon common satisfactory. The new colleague will find a rich and vibrant research environment in the fields of extra-solar planets, solar and stellar physics, astrophysical and geochemical laboratory, nuclear and extragalactic astrophysics. Konkoly Observatory is Hungary’s largest astronomical institute, located in a newly renovated building in a beautiful natural reserve area, half hour from the city center.
  • Postdoc at the University of Vienna. The successful candidate for the postdoc position in Vienna will work on the compilation of multi-wavelength data and the classification of young stellar objects. Candidates must hold a PhD degree and must have experience with source classification, handling of large (survey) datasets, statistical analysis and applications of machine learning techniques. The postdoc appointment is for 3 years, with a possible extension to 4 years depending on funding availability. Starting date can be as early as June 1st, but no later than December 1st 2021.

Application material shall include:

  • a cover letter
  • CV and publication list (if applicable)
  • a 5-page (maximum) statement of research, outlining your research experience so far
  • the names and contact details of at least two references.
  • For PhD student positions: copy of Bachelor and master academic records (exams, grades).

Please apply by sending your material to: nemesis@unige.ch. Applications received until May 30th, 2021 will receive full consideration; later applications may be considered until all positions are filled. For further inquiries please contact us at nemesis@unige.ch.
